Move to 3A, UIL changes taking effect

With August approaching, the 2012-13 school year and its activities arrive, too.

That means not only looming two-a-days and scrimmages, but actual contests that count before month’s end.
Things are lining up quickly, especially for volleyball and football.

Volleyball
Leighann Strickland will first see her charges go through an elite volleyball camp July 26-28.

Two top notch instructors, both head coaches – Julie Green at Coppell and Hollie Huston at Saginaw Chisholm Trail – return to get the Lady Porcupines ready for the 2012 season.
The camp, $110 for incoming 9-12 graders, is set for the newly-resurfaced SHS gym from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Two-a-days start Monday, Aug. 6. Players first gather from 8-10:30 a.m. then setters only return for a 1-2 p.m. practice. That’s followed by a full practice from 2-4.
Four days of two-a-days are set. Strickland said she would post teams after the morning practice on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Friday, Aug. 10 pits Springtown against its usual preseason foe, mighty Arlington Martin in a scrimmage.
That’s followed the next day with home scrimmages that begin at 9 a.m., the coach said.

Football
After months of 7-on-7 ball, the Porcupines begin to get ready for 3A play on Monday, Aug. 6 with UIL-dictated no-contact, helmet-only drills. On Aug. 10, contact is permitted.
Since SHS participated in no spring drills, Springtown can play in a pair of scrimmages.
The first is Friday, Aug. 17 at home against Sanger.
That’s followed by a road trip to the Northwest ISD Stadium to meet Frisco Heritage on Thursday, Aug. 23.
For both scrimmages, two freshman teams and the JV start at 6 p.m. then the varsity plays at 7.
