Blaze destroys lake home

Five alarm fire depletes area resources

David and Lois Clark drove all day from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Azle to see their home Monday, July 30.

“Everything’s gone but the old rugged cross,” David said as his wife, Lois, held up a soot-covered wood and silver cross retrieved from the rubble – all that’s left of their once beautiful Eagle Mountain Lake waterfront home.
The 3,800 square foot, split level home on Younger Court was destroyed by fire July 30. The Clarks were vacationing in New Mexico when they received a call from their next door neighbors informing them it was burning.
Firefighters and equipment from 17 area fire departments responded to help fight the fire. Two firefighters – one a paid firefighter from Lake Worth FD and the other a volunteer with Briar VFD – were taken to area hospitals for treatment of heat exhaustion after battling the flames in the 103 degree heat. About a dozen other firefighters were also treated at the scene for the same reason, but did not have to be hospitalized.
Briar VFD Captain Travis Reed said the initial call at 11:55 a.m. was for a fire alarm and was mistakenly sent to the Azle Fire Department. Azle responded immediately, but radioed its dispatcher that the location was actually in Briar’s coverage area.
