Scrimmages begin Friday at home

The 2012 sports two-a-days are different than those in recent years for Springtown High volleyball and football.

The main change is that SHS will participate in 3A this season. That’s why football coach Brad Turner got his Porcupines on the practice fields behind the high school a week earlier than usual.
Schools in 3A and under may not conduct spring drills, but can begin two-a-days a week earlier than 4A and 5A schools that hold spring practices.
Turner said a turnout of 130 Porcupines means he can assemble squads at the varsity, JV, and freshman A and B levels.
The Porcupines don pads Aug. 10, then are busy the next day with team photos at 10 a.m. followed by an intra-squad scrimmage a 6 p.m.
The first real scrimmage is at home on Friday, Aug. 17 against Sanger starting with the subvarsities at 6 p.m.

The Lady Porcupines, led again by Leighann Strickland, have an early schedule change; Fort Worth Nolan has replaced Arlington Martin for the opening scrimmage.
After Aug. 11 scrimmages at SHS, the season starts Aug. 14 at home against Argyle.
