| Porcupines in hunt for a hoops playoff slot Wednesday, February 03, 2010 Mark K. Campbell
The scrappy Porcupine boys basketball team is fighting for a postseason berth. Springtown (11-15, 5-4) beat a pair of 6-4A foes to keep its head above water; if the season ended today, SHS would be in.
But three teams above the Porkys remain on the schedule: at Birdville (played Feb. 2), Brewer (Feb. 5), and Azle (Feb. 12).
Games at Aledo (Feb. 9) and Saginaw (Feb. 16) are winnable, so picking off one of those top three could be big for Springtown. The Porcupines vaulted back into contention with a 64-53 victory over Boswell. A strong second half reeled in the Pioneers; Bos led 36-26 at the half, but Springtown out-scored the hosts 37-17 in the second half.
Brady Weaver got nine of his team-high 16 points in the rallying third quarter. Post Vince Rapp, who would finish with 15 points, scored 11 of them in the second half. Dakota Bartee hit three bombs for nine points – all in the opening period to keep Springtown close; still, SHS trailed 22-13 after the first eight minutes. A vital 49-44 victory over Mineral Wells was next. A 14-8 fourth quarter advantage proved to be the difference. Cooper again led, this time with 19 points. Carter Bien added 10, Weaver netted seven and Rapp scored six points to keep the Rams in the rearview mirror. |
