| adies clinch postseason berth, eyeing 6-4A crown Wednesday, February 03, 2010 Mark K. Campbell
It looks like there’s a collision on the horizon. As with last winter, Springtown (24-5, 10-1) and Aledo will likely battle for the district title in the regular season finale.
In 2009, the Ladycats topped the Lady Porcupines to grab a share of the crown. This time, SHS plans to return the favor, on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at the Aledo gym. But, if things go as planned, Springtown will own the championship outright.
Both squads remain state-ranked. The Ladycats won the first 2010 game, 63-53 on Jan. 15. Aledo’s only 6-4A loss came to Saginaw – a team the Lady Porcupines have bounced twice. So, a season finale victory over the Ladycats would make Springtown the champs. To get this far, the Lady Porcupines took care of business, beating two more 6-4A rivals.
A slow start at Boswell – SHS trailed 12-7 after the first period – was overcome and Springtown motored to a comfortable 60-37 victory. Christian Cassity continued her torrid 6-4A scoring pace, getting 19 against the Lady Pioneers. Shelbee Smith hit a trio of three-pointers en route to 14 points. Add in eight from Brooklyn Horton and that SHS trio scored more than the Boswell squad. The other Springtown points came from Christina Jack with five and Danie Kersten’s four. On Jan. 29, the Lady Porcupines hosted Mineral Wells and sent the Lady Rams packing with a 65-29 thumping. The vaunted Springtown hustling defense stymied the visitors; Mineral Wells scored just two first period points and had only 10 by halftime. Meanwhile, Springtown tallied 48. Cassity had a big second quarter – 14 points – and finished with a team-high 18. Jack added 16; she got eight in SHS’ 27-point second frame. |
