| Porkys debut on new field a winner Wednesday, March 10, 2010 Mark K. Campbell
The baseball Porcupines were supposed to play on the road in the North Texas Rotational Tournament March 5-6.
But when the sprinklers were left on in Mineral Wells, the new diamond at the Student Events Center became a sudden host.
After scrambling to find personnel to operate the clock and collect entrance fees March 5, the Porkys hit the field and scored early, gave up the lead, then roared to victory over Dallas Thomas Jefferson. Springtown (8-3), under first year coach Josh Strickland, won 11-8 en route to a 2-2 record in the rotational. Justin Loraus belted a home run during the windy debut as SHS led 5-0 after three innings. But TJ scored eight thanks to some Porcupine errors, forcing Springtown to rally with six fourth inning runs.
Later that day, the Porkys entertained Fort Worth North Side and, again, Springtown posted two big innings to win the game. After the Steers scored twice in the first inning, SHS put together innings of eight and nine runs for an easy 17-2 run-rule victory. Cole Jordan homered while Tyler Casey and Cameron Dauenhauer both cranked doubles. The next day, Springtown ventured to Graham to face Brownwood and the hosts. Against the Lions, the Porcupines out-hit Brownwood 8-6 but got out-scored 9-3. SHS’ biggest hit was a triple by Bobby Jo Tennison. In the rotational finale, Graham broke open a close game – the Porkys led 5-4 after three and a half innings – with seven fifth inning runs. SHS lost 14-5 with a pair of errors hurting. A three-run fourth inning that boosted the Porcupines to the lead was fueled by two-baggers from Tennison and Loraus. |
