Election set for school board seats
Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Come May, the Springtown ISD board of trustees will look dramatically different. But that’s not the case with the Springtown and Reno city councils, where the incumbents filed and no one showed up to challenge them.

As Monday’s filing deadline passed, the main surprise came from the Springtown school board, which has one contested seat and a newcomer in a vacant second seat.

Three people have signed up to run for Place 3 on the school board. Darrell Mathis was appointed to the seat last summer to fulfill the remaining term of B.D. Smith, who resigned.

Mathis chose not to seek re-election, but there are three candidates seeking that seat.

Wes Cottongame, Eddie Wilkerson and Vicky Trichel will all be looking for votes in the May 8 school board election.

Place 1 will also get a new occupant. Longtime school trustee Al Garrett, who was named to the seat last fall after Vivian Rogan resigned, has decided to go back into retirement.

Mike Ray is the only candidate for Place 1, and Place 2 incumbent Keith Springfield filed for re-election and has no opponent.

School board terms are three years.

Barring any surprise write-in campaigns, all three incumbents on the Springtown city council will begin new terms on May 8. Write-in candidates have until March 15 to make their intentions known – otherwise there will be no city council election.

Place 1 councilwoman Annette Burk, Place 3 councilman Tony Smith and Place 5 councilman Tom Clayton all are seeking re-election unopposed.

City council terms are for two years.

Thursday, April 8 is the last day a person may register to vote in the May 8 election. Early voting opens on April 26.Reno won’t have an election

It’s been a long time since all three Reno city council incumbents ran unopposed – but it’s happening this year.

As of Monday’s deadline, Lynda Stokes (Place 1), Bonnie Black (Place 3) and Billie Steele (Place 5) were unopposed.

There as in Springtown, if there is no official write-in campaign, no general election will be held.
