Dr. Herbert Spencer

Dr. Herbert Jennings Spencer, age 89, known to his friends as “Spence” or “Bert”, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at a nursing facility in Decatur, Texas.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

If so desired, donations may be made to the organizations mentioned below that were close to Bert’s heart.

Bert and his wife, Colleen, moved to Springtown in 1993. As a highly intelligent and educated Virologist and Microbiologist, he was well known and revered in his field for his cancer and pharmaceutical research.

Bert had an abiding interest in southwest archaeology. He was a supporter and active participant in the work of The Archaeological Conservancy in Albuquerque, New Mexico; The School of Advanced Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez, Colorado.

He loved his travels in the southwest and in New Mexico. He studied ancient Puebloan pottery and crafted examples of Mimbres pottery. He also enjoyed traveling in the Hawaiian Islands. Gourmet cooking was something he liked to do. He was a lover of books and reading. He liked fishing, woodworking, building barns and tending his farm and animals. He especially enjoyed the companionship of his cats and dogs.

Bert was a people person and so loved spending time with his neighbors and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen; two children; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
